We are a collective of
nine international visual artists navigating landscapes of transformation

For each of us, the move to the United States became a journey inward. Honoring this shared foundation and celebrating a diverse network of visual storytelling practices, The Parallel Horizons Collective was formed in 2023.

Lucía Vázquez is a journalist and photographer based in New York City focused on women stories. Her portraiture and documentary work has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post Magazine, Vice, and NPR, among other media. She is the founder of FotoFuturo Lab, an educational photography platform for emergent and socially concerned photographers.

Parallel Horizons Collective and ChaShaMa are pleased to present a two-part series of artist talks moderated by Lucía Vázquez

In this talk, three of our artists will explore the human body from real-world and abstract perspectives. They will also shed light on the distinct challenges that women encounter in the realm of photography.

Marilia Gurgel will talk about her project, Let Me Tell You About Jessica, to describe New York City through the perspective of a New Yorker that navigates the city on a wheelchair. Manuela Lourenço’s, In Between Some Sort of Shape, is a project about anxiety and giving dualities a shape through body sensations and movements. Rishika Nath will explore themes of surrealism through her project, Still Life, that aims to invite the viewer to consider the boundaries of physical existence, perception, and self-expression.

In this talk, three of our artists will explore the different ways they have used photography to answer questions, share learning, or create impact within a community.

Matilda Hay will share how her project on egg freezing, Glass Eggs, helped her to work through her own emotions around the process and has become a way to connect with other women facing the same questions. Carlos de la Sancha will discuss his search for home and belonging through his recent work, retro-ceder, made when he returned to Mexico after being away for several years. Finally, Mandana Mahdavi will talk about her project, ÂME, working with youth whose parents have been imprisoned, using photography in a collaborative approach to explore the residual impacts of mass-incarceration in America.
